What Is A Domain Name?
“A domain name is a unique name that identifies an internet resource such as a website. It is an identification string that defines a realm of administrative autonomy, authority or control on the Internet. Domain names are formed by the rules of the Domain Name System (DNS). Any name registered in the DNS is a domain name. The functional description of domain names is presented in the Domain Name System article. Broader usage and industry aspects are captured here.
Domain names are used in various networking contexts and application-specific naming and addressing purposes. In general, a domain name represents an Internet Protocol (IP) resource, such as a personal computer used to access the Internet, a server computer hosting a web site, or the web site itself or any other service communicated via the Internet.
In 2014, the number of active domains reached 271 million.” (source: Wikipedia)
In short: The domain name is the official address off your website
Tip For Choosing A Domain Name!
It needs to be related to your niche:
If you are creating a niche site on the best dog treats, you’ll want your domain to reflect the subject matter, so www.treatsforfido.com would be a great domain name. While www.internetthingys.com would not be so great.
Take some time to think about site names that will stick out to visitors. They need to “bookmark” your site name in their minds.
Keep it simple:
Don’t make your domain name too long. People won’t remember it.
Try to avoid symbols and underscores:
Hyphens symbols and underscores again make the site name hard to remember and harder to communicate with other people. There’s also a lot of discussion on whether or not Google discounts hyphenated domain names in search results. I personally don’t think this is true but still think they are something to avoid if possible.
Exact Match Domains:
An exact match domain (EMD) is one that matches or nearly matches the site’s subject matter. For example: cars.com, pizza.com or newyorkcity.com. First off, these are just examples to explain EMD. Here are TWO real life websites using Exact Match Domains:
I am sure you see the benefits of EMDs. The owners of these websites are branding their businesses AND their names in the domain name they choose, and in the description of their business.
Make Your Domain “Evergreen”:
If your website is the foundation of your online business, meaning long term and sustainable, don’t use FAD’s in your domain name. A good example would be the “Acai Berry frency” created by a famous day-time TV host which endorsed this as ‘the best ever diet supplement‘ for weight loss. The fad lasted about 8 months and almost all sites with a domain name that included the words ‘acai berry’ disappeared from search results.
What Domain Extension To Choose:
Most people still thing that .com extensions are ranking better than others, and refuse to go with any other. However, if you like the name you chose and the .com is not available, I think that .co (new), .net, .org are as good as .com.
Make list of domain names you think would be good for your website. You don’t have to make a final decision today. The domain name you use for the Free website you will create in just a minute, can be changed later when you actually buy your own domain name.
Creating Your First Free Website:
Let me say a few words about the domain name of the site you’ll create. Using the domain name of your choice, your site will be a sub domain of siterubix.com.
This free service of Wealthy Affiliate includes website hosting and allows you to operate a fully functional website on their dedicated siterubix server. Your domain (address) will look like this:
Although a sub domain, I can assure you that these sites will get indexed by the search engines (Google, Bing/Yahoo and others) AND ranked just like any other .xxx domain. The benefit of starting out with a FREE siterubix domain is that you can ‘mess up‘ without dire consequences.
If, for example, you realize that you could have chosen a better domain name, you can go just ahead, use the better name and transfer the site, including it’s content, to a new FREE site. Remember, you get 2 free sites as member of WA, and can repeat this as often as you deem necessary.
On the other hand, if you choose to use your own domain and decide later to change the name, you will have to disband the first name and ‘buy’ the new domain name.
